When you turn on your Pokemon Ruby or Pokemon Sapphire game, you'll be greeted to a very impressive looking opening scene. After that, you'll be at the main menu. You might want to change the options before starting a new game, if you wish. Anyway, when you're ready, hit "New Game".
You'll be greeted by Birch, a Pokemon Professor. And he basically rambles on like Oak and Elm did in their respective versions until he asks you for your name. Well, actually, he asks you your gender first. There isn't any big difference if you choose Boy or Girl, it just affects which house you move in to (and which house your Rival moves in to), and what your character looks like. You should probably use your name, or nickname, but if you don't feel like it, feel free to use one of the default names. Here are the different default names your character has:

Or, you can enter your own name/nickname, up to 7-letters.
After you get that decided, Birch will finish his talking, and you'll appear in a moving van.
